Documentary "I Do Exist" To Be Shown Nationwide October 8-15, 2005
Churches and community groups invited to take part in the event
During the month of October, 2005, churches, colleges and community groups all over the country will be showing the documentary "I Do Exist." Produced by Warren
Throckmorton, PhD, "I Do Exist" is 48 minute video documenting identity transformation in the lives of people who have gone from gay to straight.
"The documentary features people who have a story to tell that is not often heard. Many in our country are skeptical that people who once identified as homosexual can transition
to a heterosexual identity. This film introduces the audience to 5 such people along with expert commentary," said Dr. Throckmorton.
I Do Exist was launched last October and was shown in churches, libraries, colleges, and homes all over the country. Organizations and individuals wanting to take part and
host a showing are encouraged to contact Dr. Throckmorton at ewthrockmorton@gcc.edu, 724-458-3787 and see www.idoexist.com for a downloadable viewer's guide with
ideas for the showing. Hosting organizations are encouraged to register their event at www.idoexist.com.
Featured in the film is Dr. Robert Spitzer, from Columbia University. Dr. Spitzer is well known for his research in diagnosis and sexual orientation. Dr. Spitzer is also famous for
his role in removing homosexuality from the list of disorders published by the American Psychiatric Association in 1973.
Dr. Mark Yarhouse of Regent University is also featured as an expert commentator. Dr. Yarhouse recently presented a paper on sexual identity at the American Psychological
Association?s annual convention.
One of the former homosexuals was once featured in an award winning film as a gay man. Noe Gutierrez was in the video "It?s Elementary" explaining what being gay was like
to middle school children. Mr. Gutierrez has since become heterosexual and talks about his experiences on this video.
The purpose of the event is to raise awareness and provoke discussion concerning the topic of sexual identity. October 11 is National Coming Out Day when the nation's
attention will be on sexual identity. The film I Do Exist gives the narratives of 5 people who have chosen an alternative path. Groups can raise the awareness of this option by
showing the film and making their constituents aware of resources for assistance. Reproducible materials are available for those groups that use the contact information below
to request it.
